Princess Diana’s wedding cake slice sold to collector

As dedicated cake makers in Birmingham, we’re always interested in the latest news surrounding the world of cakes, so our eye was caught by this bit of news. A 33-year-old slice of British history has been purchased – a piece of the cake from the 1981 wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. It was bought by a private collector at an auction in Los Angeles who paid $1375 (£828) for it. The cake is still in the white and silver monogrammed presentation box which it originally came in. Although it is obviously no longer edible, this has to be one of the most collectible pieces of cake the world has ever seen. As well as the cake itself, the lucky buyer also got an original card which says “With best wishes from Their Royal Highnesses, the Prince & Princess of Wales”.

There is a small percentage of the world’s population that are dedicated royal cake collectors and some even own cake slices dating back to the days of Queen Victoria’s marriage in 1840. Just six years ago, another slice commemorating Princess Diana and Prince Charles sold for over a thousand pounds, even though it didn’t come from the cake served at the wedding but one of the 22 distributed to the royal staff.
